Florida East Coast Railway (FEC) is a large Regional Railroad running from the Port of Miami north to Jacksonville over 351 mainline track miles. FEC boasts one of the best service reliability records in the United States and with this service commitment, management demands a high level of performance excellence from its operating assets. Locomotives represent a significant capital investment and the availability of the 50+ unit fleet is critical to the success of FEC and its customers.

Locomotive maintenance is a daily activity at FEC from short inspections on each unit before work begins for the day to complete 92 day or other interval servicings per Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) requirements to extensive unit overhauls. The variability and frequency of work was demanding for the organization to manage on paper and so FEC implemented AssetPro Locomotive to manage these requirements and support organizational excellence.

AssetPro Locomotive integrates with on-board asset health monitoring equipment and 3rd party oil analysis services providing automated system email or text alerts so management can make decisions in real time, often precluding costly critical equipment failures and service interruptions. Locomotive crews contact the Dispatcher’s office to report road failures triggering the same automated alert system. Automated system flags ensure these types of issues are managed to closure for each asset.

Base AssetPro Locomotive functionality supports meeting all corporate maintenance management and regulatory compliance requirements through standardized electronic workflow management. Granular historical information is available for each unit in the event of incident or asset disposition. Warranty and Cores Tracking along with a parts subsystem are new functionality to AssetPro Locomotive providing additional financial and operational management capabilities.

Using the AssetPro™ Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) platform, AssetPro Signal™ was configured and installed at all RailAmerica properties. Signal Maintainers with wireless-equipped laptop or tablet computers complete easy to navigate electronic forms capture the required work for each inspection. In certain cases, paper forms are still used to capture inspection data then the system is updated.

Corporate level visibility of field operations has significantly improved as permission-based user levels allow Signal Department management to see the global operational picture. The Query Engine allows for easy sorting of data by region, railroad or subdivision. Status of inspections is shown through various system icons for all users.

Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad (IHB) is the largest switch carrier in the United States handling interchange traffic for several Class 1 and other trunk line railroads in the greater Chicago and northern Indiana area. IHB handles in excess of 600,000 carloads annually and has approximately 750 operating employees. It is a high intensity operation in the heart of the nation’s rail network.

Tired of managing the workload and complexities of its Safety and Operational Testing/Training program on paper, IHB installed SafeTrack to streamline its processes and improve its safety culture, ultimately resulting in a Gold Harriman Award in 2009. The management and employees at IHB are directly responsible for this great Safety achievement, but SafeTrack provided the platform to better manage their training/testing program.

As a dynamic electronic recordkeeping system, SafeTrack improved overall program visibility, illustrated program trends for analysis and remediation and facilitated a balanced schedule to ensure all employees meet their annual Regulatory and Corporate testing/training requirements. Ad Hoc and predefined report capabilities quickly provide system data output relevant to the organization. Use of SafeTrack minimizes the time Supervisors spend in the office doing paperwork so they can spend more time in the field productively working with their people.
